What is the gut-brain axis and how is it related to our gut feeling?
Don't we all know ancient sayings like: "I have a gut feeling" or "I feel sick just thinking about it"? Such sayings are not humbug but say a great deal, because there is an important connection between our brain and the gastrointestinal tract.
The gut is often underestimated, yet it performs a multitude of functions. It breaks down the many different foods we eat into their chemical components and ensures that we absorb nutrients. Furthermore, it also produces over 80% of our immune cells and can even produce vitamins...
The gastrointestinal tract is permeated by its own nervous system, called the enteric nervous system, or ENS for short. It consists of over 100 million nerve cells. Because of the many nerve cells and the interaction between the gut and the brain, the gut is also referred to as the second brain or "gut brain". If, for example, the digestive tract is irritated due to inflammation, the brain is informed and the immune system can react. Conversely, the brain signals to the ENS when there is stress, which can cause symptoms in the gut.
How are gut flora and depression related?
It is now known that gut bacteria have a connection to the brain and psyche. Researchers suspect that the metabolism of bacteria in the digestive tract could disrupt the balance of brain neurotransmitters such as noradrenaline, dopamine or serotonin, and thus impair mental health.
A study of over 1000 patients with diagnosed depression found that two specific genera of bacteria – Coprococcus and Dialister – were significantly less common in their digestive tract than in a control group. Unlike other bacteria that were also more or less common, this was not related to a particular diet or to side effects of antidepressants.
The metabolism of Coprococcus bacteria could affect the brain for various reasons, scientists believe: This type of bacteria excretes the fatty acid butyrate, which is an energy source for intestinal cells and a possible precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine. It is suspected that the bacteria also provide the body with material for the production of transmitters. If these are missing, the brain metabolism could become unbalanced.
There are certain substances with "neuroactivating potential" that are associated with specific gut bacteria. The suspected connection between metabolic end products and the neurotransmitter balance in the brain is still pure speculation, say the scientists. Their analyses could only show correlations, not a causal mechanism; in their analyses, they also discovered changes in the bacterial flora in depressed patients that were more a consequence of therapy than a cause of the illness.

You can also surround yourself with more light in your everyday life through brighter lighting indoors and, of course, exercise outdoors as much as possible. Especially endurance sports outdoors promote the release of mood-lifting endorphins. Movement in the fresh air should activate the circulation as early as possible in the day, so it is best to go outdoors in the early morning hours. Even if the sun is not shining, a cloudy sky is significantly brighter than any ordinary artificial light source.
Do food and certain nutrients also contribute to happiness?
Yes, definitely! You should pay attention to a balanced diet all year round, but especially in the cold season. However, a balanced diet often falls by the wayside, especially in stressful situations. Therefore, high-quality food supplements can help to ensure an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals.
